California DSA Backs Billionaire Tom Steyer
Em Smith
The Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) has made its pick in the California Governor’s race...billionaire Democrat Tom Steyer.
Steyer is running for Governor as a “progressive” and a “class traitor.” He wants you to think he’s the kind of billionaire you wouldn’t stick in a submarine to the Titanic.
So is Steyer really a good billionaire?
Of course! Steyer made his money investing in nice things, like coal, oil gas, big pharma, and private prisons. His billions come from Farallon Capital, a hedge fund he launched in 1986.
Between 2004 and 2006, under Steyer’s leadership, Farallon invested $90 million in the Corrections Corporation of America (CCA). CCA is one of America’s largest private prisons. In 2025, the company expected to make $300 million from contracts with ICE. The company is an “innovator” in ICE detention, using slave labor in immigration facilities to maximize profits, paying prisoners as little as $1 a day.
In 2020, Steyer launched a vanity campaign for President, using $340 million in his own money. Far from being a “class traitor,” Steyer was a loyal attack dog for the capitalist class. Steyer opposed Medicare for All and attacked Bernie Sanders over “how he will pay for it.”
At the time, DSA tweeted, “Tom Steyer, you're a billionaire. Get off the stage.” So why is DSA endorsing him now?
California DSA’s voter guide tries to justify it: “Tom Steyer is somehow running the most progressive campaign.”
But that’s a lie. There’s an independent socialist on the ballot: Ramsey Robinson, with the Peace and Freedom Party.
DSA waves it away with lesser evilism: “We highly encourage voters to not cast a protest vote, as the stakes are incredibly high and the chance of the top two candidates both being Republicans is still very real.”
The stakes are too high. Don’t vote for the socialist. Vote for a billionaire.
This is where the path of the Democratic Party leads.
It’s time to dump the Democrats and begin building a party of our own. For starters, DSA members should throw out the leaders who made this awful endorsement.
Vote Ramsey Robinson. Put Tom Steyer in a submarine.
